Human Rights Advocacy: Advanced Level

Course Description

During the course, you will study the basics of human rights advocacy at the national and international levels, with the specifics of each Central Asian country. You will learn how to plan a human rights advocacy campaign, including the architecture of decision-making at the state and local levels in your country, tracking your advocacy proposals, and variations during the advocacy campaign. You will understand how to best build and maintain communications with decision-makers and learn about information support for an advocacy campaign.

Course Objective

The course “Human Rights Advocacy: Advanced Level” will provide students with an in-depth understanding of advocacy and practical exercises for learning the tools, methods, and approaches for conducting a human rights advocacy campaign.

Course Audience

The course is designed for human rights defenders with experience or knowledge of advocacy basics. It is recommended that those without advocacy experience take the course “Basics of Advocacy” first.

This course may also be useful for journalists, lawyers working with civil society organisations, human rights workers, and government officials, especially those working with civil society or international human rights mechanisms.

Course Outcome

By completing this course, you will have an even more precise understanding of the goals, content, and structure of a human rights advocacy campaign, become familiar with cases of successful advocacy campaigns, learn how to communicate with decision-makers properly, measure the impact of your advocacy campaign, as well as learn about the aspects to be considered for the safe implementation of an advocacy campaign.

 Course Format

The course includes 5 modules and is designed for 2-3 weeks of study. The weekly load, depending on the complexity of the section and the amount of independent work, is 2-3 hours. The modules consist of video lectures of up to 13 minutes, a text summary of lectures, assignments for independent work, and a final test.

The course does not offer ready-made solutions to all issues and challenges of human rights advocacy. Its content is based on the author's practical experience.

The course was developed within the framework of the project “Civil Society for Kazakhstan (CS4K)”, implemented by the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) together with the PF “Institute for National and International Development Initiatives (INMIR)” with the financial support of the European Union. The project aims to promote fundamental freedoms and rights in Kazakhstan through the efforts of civil society. One of the important components of the project is capacity building and training of civil society organizations.
